NuevaSync: Exchange Conduit for Google Calendar and Contacts

Way cool!!

They have created an “Exchange Server” (the server part of ActiveSync) which is just a gateway to YOUR Google/Plaxo data… Super nice.

The admin page is 100% usable from straight from a mobile browser. Again top$

No software need on the device (Nokia, SE, iPhone, WinMo) – just use the Active Sync client (or Mail For Exchange for Symbian)

Regular users no longer need an Exchange server – just use Google. Also MobileMe (iPhone) seems to have gotten a serious competitor.

mDesktop - Remote Control Your Windows Mobile Device with Ease

Cool little app. Haven’t tested it but it looks very nice…

Everything you do with your Windows Mobile smartphone you can now do from your PC - on your big screen, big keyboard and complete integration with your desktop. With mDesktop on your PC and Windows Mobile smartphone connected to it you can: make outgoing calls from the smartphones address book, manage incoming ones with ease from your desktop, have threaded SMS conversations, manage images, manage calendar and contacts straight on your phone, no synchronization required.

I took a bit of time to play around with mDesktop today and I have to admit that it is pretty impressive. Being able to control my handset without having to type away on the tiny QWERTY keyboard was refreshing. Also when using mDesktop, installing CAB files on your device from your desktop couldn't be any easier and the same can be said for taking screenshots of your phones display. If you were looking for a somewhat inexpensive way to remote control your handset you can pick up MotionApps mDesktop today from their website for $19.99.

Review: Freedom Keychain GPS 2000

Way cool GPS unit….

Freedom Keychain 2000

Mapping software has been available for cell phones, laptops, and pdas for years. When Rand McNally, DeLorme and other mapping companies first introduced these software packages, GPS compatibility was inevitable. While phones such as the Samsung BlackJack II have begun to incorporate GPS into the phone itself, many rely on external GPS receivers either connected through an expansion port, cable or Bluetooth.

As technology advances, these receivers seem to get smaller and faster. The best illustration as to how small and fast these devices have become may be the Freedom Keychain GPS 2000 ($89.95).

WMExperts reviewed the original Freedom Keychain back in December and found it a surprisingly good bluetooth GPS unit. What do you do when you have a surprisingly good Bluetooth GPS Unit? Scrap it and replace it with a better one!

Read on for the full review!

Out of the Box

The GPS 2000 is about the same size of an automobile keyless entry control. Measuring 1.8 x 1.26 x .58 inches, the receiver is a feather light .77 ounces. A spring hook is attached to the top of the device so the receiver can be carried on a key chain.

The power switch and USB/charger port are the only external parts. Colored LEDs run under the matte black finish to indicate charging status, GPS signal, Bluetooth Signal and battery status.

Front View

The receiver is finished in a black matte paint that is a little susceptible to finger prints and I can see it wearing off after being carried around with a bunch of keys. During the testing of the receiver, I could begin to see light wear on the finish. I am not sure if due to an antenna/reception issue the company couldn’t have used a more durable coating on the device or not. I doubt a worn finish will affect the performance and is mainly a cosmetic issue.

I was impressed with the receiver’s small form factor but had to raise an eyebrow questioning the unit’s performance. I am glad no wagers were place on this device because I would have had to eat crow.

Performance

When you pull the owner’s manual out of the box, it’s impressively thick. Once you begin to read it, you realize the thickness is due to the manual being written in ten languages. The actual instruction for use is only two pages.

In reading the brief owner’s manual, Freedom reports that satellite acquisition time ranged from 36 seconds for a cold start and 1 second for a hot start. As I understand it, a cold start is when the receiver has been off for a while and has lost all memory of the satellite signals. Hot start is when the receiver has only been turned of for a brief period of time and the signal with the satellites hasn’t faded from memory.

The start times reported are exceptionally good and more common for larger, stand alone devices than receivers the size of a matchbox and again my eyebrow raised in doubt as I began to use the receiver.

Pairing is easy. Turn on your phone’s Bluetooth, turn on the GPS 2000 and once the device is discovered, you enter the top-secret factory code. I then went to Google Maps, selected “Use GPS” and to my surprise the signal was already acquired and my position located. While I didn’t have a stopwatch running it couldn’t have taken more that two minutes from the time I turned on the phone’s Bluetooth to seeing the little map dot pinpointing my location (I could feel my eyebrow lowering).

I turned off the GPS in Google Maps, turned off the GPS 2000 and grabbed a stop watch. After waiting five minutes, I turned everything back on and 34 seconds later, I had my position plotted. I also tried the GPS 2000 with Live View and the results were equally as impressive.

Concerned the maybe the built-in GPS of the BlackJackII may be inadvertently boosting the GPS 2000; I tried it with my laptop. Using the receiver indoors, sitting on a table next to a window, it took 1.5 minutes for Microsoft’s Streets and Trips to acquire a location from a cold start.

I have a TomTom XL sitting on the dash of my car. To give you a comparison, from a cold start it takes the TomTom just overr 1.5 minutes to boot up and acquire a signal. It takes my Garmin handheld GPS almost 3 minutes to acquire a signal from a cold start. I was very impressed with the GPS 2000’s acquisition times.

Side View-1

The speed of the acquisition is attributed to the GPS 2000’s chipset. The GPS 2000 uses a MTK chipset and a built in ARM7EJ-S processor. After a brief education on GPS chipsets, apparently the MTK chipset is slowly replacing the SiRF III chipsets. The MTK has lower power consumption, an active antenna, can track more satellites, has more accurate positioning and about a 6 second advantage on cold start acquisitions.

While start up time was off the wall, reception was equally cool. Freedom claims in the GPS 2000 even works while in your pocket. My first thought was “utter hogwash”. An overcast day kills the signal on most GPS receivers and I’m to believe this tiny receiver will work while in my pocket?

Yet another instance where I’m glad no wager was placed on the performance of the GPS 2000. After sliding the receiver in my pants pocket, I full expected a “signal lost” or “GPS unavailable” to pop up on the BlackJack’s screen. I watched, waited and nothing happened. So I decided to drive down the road a bit and to my surprise, my location began to adjust with my movement. This tiny little receiver works in your pocket!

As mentioned, it will pick up signals indoors as far a window is close by. It will also pick up signals on an overcast night. While the reception is as impressive as the acquisition time, the receiver does have limitations in that it will not pick up a signal while in a concrete, windowless basement.

I had no issues with pairing the Freedom GPS 2000 with my laptop or BlackJack II. The only difficulties I had while using the GPS 2000 was with the programs utilizing the receiver and not the receiver itself. While some of the software applications weren’t user friendly, the Freedom GPS was extremely user friendly.

Freedom reports battery life to be approximately 10 hours. Based on my three day review, this report is accurate. The only performance drawback that I could find is the options available to recharge the receiver. The GPS 2000 comes packaged with a USB/Charging cable to allow you to charge the unit through your computer and a car charger. I could not find any information to believe a wall charger is available for the receiver.

Overall Impression

After using the GPS 2000, all I can say is “WOW”! Competitively priced with other Bluetooth GPS receivers, the GPS 2000 is a dependable receiver and its compact size makes it convenient to have available.

It would be nice if the GPS 2000 had a wall charger and the matte black paint could be more durable. However, these two deficiencies do not detract from the unit’s performance.

If you are looking for a GPS solution for your phone, laptop or pda the Freedom Keychain GPS 2000 ($89.95) should be high on your short list.

Tema: Windows Mobile-platformen vokser i styrke.

Computerworld

Microsoft i dag

3D pausefisk
Demonstration af Xperias 3D-muligheder. Panelet viser et akvarie med fisk i 3D.

Xperia har to kameraer.

http://www.solomobi.com/pic/lionking.jpg

Apple Licenses ActiveSync From Microsoft for iPhone

Exchange push on iPhones!!! Very nice…. Can’t wait for more details on the SDK to surface following the announcement today

"Apple is hosting a media event today to outline the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) and "some exciting new enterprise features". There have been a collection of rumors suggesting that Apple may not be able to deliver the final SDK immediately. That hasn't stopped a number of companies, such as reQall (memory aid), Six Apart (blogging software), and Freeverse (sports games), from announcing their intentions to write iPhone native applications with the new SDK. Meanwhile MySpace and SlingMedia have been rumored to be early recipients of the unreleased development kit."

Love it or hate it, the iPhone is rapidly shaping up to be the 800 pound Gorilla in the US smartphone market, if not from a market-share perspective quite yet, certainly from a mindshare perspective. The iPhone is on fire, and Apple's announcement about the SDK is like gasoline on that fire - the iPhone represents a new, and quite likely lucrative market for developers to tap into (right Alex?). On the Windows Mobile side of things, we still have all that slick native Exchange support, so those iPhone users can keep their slick screen rotating to themselves. Uh, right?

Wrong. Apparently, Apple has licensed ActiveSync from Microsoft. Check it:

"Apple has licensed ActiveSync from Microsoft and will be incorporating native ActiveSync and Exchange support into the iPhone's existing apps (mail, cal, contacts)."

There were some kludges involving Plaxo to push Outlook data around, but native support means the iPhone now has the most potent feature for Enterprise markets. And if it's also easy to develop for, you'll likely see line of business applications appear for it - and that's not good news for Windows Mobile, which since the iPhone launch has had the unfortunate perception of being a stagnant platform (in the eyes of some).

Oh well - at least use Windows Mobile users can look up contacts much faster than the iPhone users can...for now.

New Afaria Security Manager Announced

Sybase iAnywhere Releases Breakthrough Handheld Security Functionality

Today Sybase announced the release of the new Afaria Security Manager (Filter Driver). This is great news!

As you can see in the press release I’ve been running the betas for quite some time now and I’m really really impressed with how good it works. I couldn’t detect any battery degrade even when running at full encryption AND Exchange Push E-mail. Very good.

The key features are:

  • Advanced data decryption – Using a breakthrough architecture, all encrypted data is decrypted on-demand only when requested by the application or operating system. This allows the mobile user to have quick entry when logging into the device, since data is no longer being decrypted at login. In addition, as the architecture only re-encrypts changed data, rather than all data, application performance is further maximized along with dramatic improvements in battery life.
  • Seamless application integration – Encryption and decryption processes can be applied to data used by any application stored on a mobile device, without affecting the usability or execution of the application.   This means that an enterprise can confidently secure all confidential, proprietary and/or sensitive data without having to worry about application compatibility.
  • GPS system interoperability – New functionality prevents locking of a mobile device while a GPS application is operational, so that users can have full use of GPS navigation programs without interruption.
  • User interface enhancements – An improved file selection user interface on Windows Mobile Pocket PC/Professional devices now includes folder selection and improved sub-directory support so that end users can select additional data for encryption.   In addition, alarms and notifications, such as calendar alerts, are now displayed in front of the device lock screen.   This allows the end user to view and dismiss notifications without logging into the device.
  • Temporary password recovery improvements –To handle the varying device form factors, the device lock interface was enhanced to allow easy access to the password recovery system, and to allow end users to place phone calls to the help desk from a locked phone.

You can catch a webcast about the features on Thursday March 13, 2008. Times and registration information can be found at: http://www.sybase.com/afaria_features

Headset med kortlæser

Nice!!!

Windows Mobile Trojan Spotted in the Wild

Ok ok it happened!!  An actual piece of malware for the Windows Mobile platform.

You need of curse the accept and install a “legal†software package in order to bypassthe security model of Windows Mobile.

I’m not sure we need anti-virus / anti-spyware yet on our devices but it IS disturbing that real signed and verified software installs malware. It sorts of kills the security model. Smartphones (Windows Mobile Standard devices) runs a two-tier model (normal and privileged) and any “games pack†should only run as “normal†and hence NOT be able to alter the security of the device. Go smartphones!

This is the offending suite of games.

This is the first “in the wild†Windows Mobile malware I can remember off the top of my head. It was discovered in China and written up over at McAfee. Basically if you downloaded a games pack (including Google Maps in that pack) from a certain Chinese website it installed a piece of software that did the following:

ï‚·  Silently makes your smartphone accept unsigned applications

ï‚·  Installs a hidden, difficult to remove program that sends your personal information back to home base

ï‚·  Installs a copy of the malware on your memory card for further spreading.

The site has since been shut down (despite protests from the developer that he didn't mean to do anything evil). It's a bummer, though, I am not keen on installing anti-virus on my smartphone.

The InfoJack Trojan spreads by either tricking mobile users into installing seemingly legitimate application installation files or if punters inadvertently use an infected memory card on vulnerable devices. The malware has been spotted circulating in China. - Register

Anybody running anti-virus / anti-spyware on their smartphones? How's your performance?
